Week 2 Respiratory Flashcards
What are the layers of the lung?
parital - covers inside thoracic cavity
Visceral- covers each lung separately
The parietal layer covers
the inside of the thoracic cavity, upper surface diaphragm and surface of mediastinum
The visceral layer covers
each lung separately
What is between the two layers?
fluid
Surface tension of the lungs
fluid creates surface tension to hold visceral layer up to parietal layer
breaks visceral from parital and cause lung collapse in
pneumothorax
scalenes originate where?
C2-C7
SCM role in breathing
contracts with paradoxical inspiration
the diagrams role in breathing?
When you breathe in, your diaphragm contracts (tightens) and flattens, moving down towards your abdomen. The parietal and visceral layer of pleura move down. This movement creates a vacuum in your chest, allowing your chest to expand (get bigger) and pull in air.
Scalenes insert
in the first and second rib
Scalenes role in breathing

Where is the fluid of the lungs?
the pleural space
