Week 6 Intelligence Flashcards
Explain psychometrics
scientific study of the products of intelligence - knowledge, attributes, personality etc
What is fluid intelligence
basic power of reasoning and problem solving
What is crystallised intelligence
knowledge as a result of using fluid intelligence
Describe the information processing theory
The basic mental processes of perception, learning, memory and thought are intelligent, not just the ability to answer the question right.
List the 3 kinds of intelligence in the Triarchic theory
1- Analytic - measured in IQ tests
2- Creative - arts based IQ
3- Practical - logic in everyday
List the 8 intelligences by Gardner in Multiple Intelligence theory
1- Linguistic 2- Logic-mathematical 3- Spatial 4- Musical 5- Body-kinaesthetic (hand-eye, coordination) 6- Intrapersonal (self awareness) 7- Interpersonal (understand and interact with others) 8- Naturalistic (see patterns in nature)
Is there a universally accepted definition or measure of intelligence
No
What are the 3 main characteristics of intelligence
1- abstract/reasoning thinking
2- problem solving abilities
3- the capacity to acquire knowledge
Scoring of IQ tests mathematical equation is
(mental age/chronological age)*100
In 1930’s Wechsler improved IQ tests by (3)
1- Including verbal and non verbal tests
2- Not tested on schooling based learning only
3- Sub-tested to identify strengths and weaknesses.
What is the average intelligence score for an IQ test
100.
Above means more intelligence for that age.
Describe IQ tests statistical reliability
The scores must be repeatable and less affected by chance factors.
Describe IQ tests statistical validity
The scores must be interpreted and used properly
What are genetic and environmental influences on intelligence
Environmental- education, culture, life experiences
Genetics- affects because lower/higher IQ of parents affects what environment they produce for the child.
What factors are involved in IQ scores and socioeconomic status
1- parents jobs, status and environment predicts child’s job, status and environment. Cyclical
2- Parents income affects child’s environment
3- Upper and middle income demonstrate positive relationship to learning
4- Higher IQ people go to Uni and gets higher paying jobs.
