Week 11 Relationships and Interpersonal Issues Flashcards
Define conformity
changing attitudes or behaviour to accommodate the standards of peers or groups
Define obedience
involves a change in behaviour in response to a demand from an authority figure - the presence of others who disobey appears to be the most powerful factor in reducing participants’ obedience
Define compliance
occurs when people adjust their behaviour because of a request. Explicit requests occur when someone asks you directly for something. Implicit requests occur when someone ‘looks at you’ in a certain way to cue your behaviour.
Define altruism
behaviour that helps other people when there is no apparent gain, or even a potential cost.
Define helping behaviour
is an act intended to benefit another person.
What are the 3 major theories of why people help
1- arousal cost: reward of less arousal- seeing a victim is distressing and anxiety provoking, and this motivates people to do something to reduce the unpleasant arousal.
2- empathy–altruism: they feel empathy toward the person in need.
3- evolutionary theory-altruistic behaviour inherited
Define aggression
Verbal or physical behaviour aimed at harming another.
Prevalence and form of aggression varies across different cultures (but gender differences consistent)
Why are people aggressive (4)
- Genetics
- Biological mechanisms (damage physically to brain)
- Hormones (boys particularly)
- Learning and Cultural mechanisms (Monkey see monkey do)
Define group process
when people congregate, their actions tend to become patterned in various ways.
Define leadership in group process
Good leadership depends not just on a person’s traits but also on the task at hand, and the interaction between these factors and the leader’s style.
Define ‘Groupthink’
Herd mentality. Not logical based thoughts.
