What are the 4 elements of language
1- Phonemes - smallest unit of sound in speech
2- Morphemes - combination of phonemes
3- Phrases - combo of words
4- Sentences - sequence of words to express a thought.
What is surface structure
How words are ordered/arranged in a sentence
What is deep structure
The subtext or underlying meaning of a sentence
Describe the 1st year of language development
4 months- babble
9 months- reproduce sounds that occur in language the most + babble begins to sound like sentences.
Describe the 2nd year of language development
One word stage
18 months- learning several new words a day
By 2- know 50-100 words and put together 2 at a time.
Describe the 3rd+ years of language development
Begin using auxiliary verbs “Adam is going”
Use ‘wh’ words- what who why
Put together clauses to make sentences
5- most have gained most of the grammatical rules of their language.
Describe linguistic determinism
Words guide thought.
We don’t think it if there isn’t a word for it.
Describe thoughts shaping language
The more we think about concepts, the more likely we will generate a word to represent them.
