Cognitive Dissonance
The feelings of discomfort that result from holding two conflicting beliefs.
Define the Self Perception Theory
- Developed by Daryl Benn.
- People develop attitudes and opinions by observing their own behaviour and drawing conclusions from it.
- Downplays the role of internal thoughts and emotions in attitude formation.
Define Social Schemas
Cognitive structures comprising the presumed characteristics of a role, even, person or group.
Stereotypes
Social Schemas about a group, be it positive or negative.
Prejudice
A negative attitude towards people based on their membership of a group about who we hold a largely negative stereotype.
Impression Management
The deliberate effort to influence the impression that others form of us.
Define Motivation
The process that initiates, guides and maintains goal oriented behaviours.
Name and describe the 4 theories of Motivation
- Evolution: Biological, instincts we are born with such as sucking.
- Homeostasis: Fulfilling urges and drives, such as hunger and addiction.
- Incentives and expectations: Cognitive driven - intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
- Psychodynamic and humanistic views: Our subconscious and free will.
Attitude
The positive or negative evaluative reaction towards a stimulus.
