Conformity
A change of belief or behaviour to accord with others.
Compliance
Conformity that involves publicly acting in accord with social pressure while privately disagreeing.
Obedience
Acting in accord with direct order.
Acceptance
Conformity that involves both acting and believing, in accord with social pressure. Sometimes follows compliance.
Sherif’s Norm Formation
Using autokinetic phenomenon and confederates to test suggestability.
The Chameleon Effect
Behaviour synchronization with others around unconsciously.
Autokinetic Phenomenon
Self motion. Apparent movement of a stationary point of light in the dark.
Mood linkage
Sharing moods with those around us.
The Werther Effect
Suggestable suicide waves.
Asch’s Group Pressure
Testing the effect of group pressures on an individuals perception and sense of right/wrong. Will conform 33%.
Milgram’s Obedience
Testing the strength of obedience up against the expense of another human’s well being.
What breeds obedience?
The greater the distance and depersonalization of the victim
Increased closeness and legitimacy of authority and institution.
The liberating effect of group influence.
Predictions of Conformity
5 people has maximum effect. Multiple small groups > multiple individuals. Unanimity. Cohesion. Higher status. Public response. No prior commitment.
Normative Influence
Conformity based on a persons desire to fulfill others expectations.
Desire to be liked, avoid rejection, being on people’s good side.
Leads to public compliance.
Informational Influence
Conformity that results from accepting evidence about reality provided by other people.
When reality is ambiguous.
Perceptions will be influenced leading to private acceptance.
