Week 5 - Skeletal System 2 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a cartilage?
A
Extracellular matrix
▪ Chondrocytes (cartilage cells), proteoglycans (trap H2O) and fibres
▪ High water content enables it to spring back to its original shape
▪ No calcium, so flexible
▪ Avascular, nutrients diffuse in, heals slowly
2
Q
What are the three types of cartilage?
A
- Hyaline (glass) cartilage
- Elastic cartilage
- Fibrocartilage
3
Q
What is hyaline cartilage?
A
Dense, fine collagen fibres, abundant
4
Q
What is elastic cartilage?
A
Packed with elastin fibres
5
Q
What is fibrocartilage?
A
Dense, parallel, coarse collagen fibres
6
Q
What is osteogenesis?
A
- Nutrients
▪ Minerals
▪ Vitamins (A for osteoblasts, C for collagen, D for Ca2+ etc. - Hormones (stimulate bone growth)
▪ Growth hormone. Thyroxin. Sex hormones
7
Q
What is calcium homeostasis?
A
- Bone is a metabolically active organ
- Exchanging minerals with extracellular fluid
▪ Imbalance of Ca2+ disrupts body functioning - Calcitriol (vitamin D) – raises Ca2+ by
▪ Promoting absorption of Ca2+ through intestinal wall - Parathyroid hormone – raises Ca2+ by
▪ Stimulating osteoclasts
▪ Stimulating kidneys to produce calcitriol
8
Q
What are the 2 division of skeleton?
A
- Axial skeleton
- Appendicular skeleton
9
Q
What is axial skeleton?
A
- Skull
- Vertebral column
-Thoracic cage
10
Q
What is appendicular skeleton?
A
Limbs and supporting elements (arms, legs and girdles)
