What is nutrition?

  • Chemical substance obtained from food that is used in the body to provide the energy (Adenosine triphosphate, ATP), building blocks and regulating agents to support life
  • Some non-essential (body can make), some essential (body cannot make)

What is adenosine triphosphate (ATP)?

A
  • Body’s energy-transfer molecule (Daily ATP = 2 x your body weight)
  • Briefly stores energy gained from breakdown of food

What makes food complex?

A
  • Most plant foods are composed of ~600 chemicals
  • Taking in a food includes many components that we still do not know what they do and how they chemically interact with each other and within the context of the total diet (food synergy)
