What are the policy implications of Racism and health?
- Institutions must recognize the existence of racism in Canada, to develop awareness and education programs
- Govt must commit funding for anti-discrimination laws and regulations
- Govt needs to improve people of colour’s living and working conditions
What is Institutionalized racism?
- Has to deal with material conditions and access to power
- Association between socioeconomic status and race
What are material conditions? (5)
- Education
- Housing
- Employment
- Medical facilities
- Clean environment
What is access to power? (3)
Access to
- Information: ones history
- Resources: wealth and infrastructure
- Voice: voting rights, representation, control of media
What is personally mediated racism?
- Prejudice and discrimination
- Can be intentional or unintentional, acts of commission or omission
What is prejudice?
Assumptions about abilities, motives, intentions of others according to race
What is discrimination?
Differential actions towards others according to their race

- Lack of respect
- Suspicion
- Devaluation
- Scapegoating
- Dehumanization
What is internalized racism?
- When racism is accepted by members of the stigmatized race
- Acceptance of their own abilities, intrinsic worth
