WEEK 5 - GROUNDED THEORY Flashcards
grounded theory
- uncovering social processess
- inductive approach incolving a set of procedures to arrive at a theory about social processess
- to construct theory when no theory exists or when theory fails to explain a set of circumstances
- to discover underlying social forces that shape human behavior
sample size for grounded theory
30 to 50 cases
purposive sampling
- select participants with experience and knowledge related to study domain
- select events and incidents that are relatedd to the social process of interest
think of throwing a snowball, it involves throwing on other people
snowbal sampling
participants recommended by other participants in the study
theoretical sampling
- select experiences that help researches test ideas and refine emerging finding
- used to clarify emerging concepts
does data gathering and data analysis occur together
yes
Data analysis
- open coding - data is reviewed line by line, categorized into discrete parts, compare for similarities and differences (think about a pinterest page and how you analyze it and look at the different posts)
- axial and selective coding - codes of data are clustered to form categories, they are either expanded or collapsed into one another (after looking at posts you liked you make a pin board of things under 1 category and so on)
- Constant comparative methods - data are compared with other data continuously (after a while, you visit other pin boards and compare them with each other)
How is data collected?
interviews - semi structured, audio recorded
Observations - field notes and memos
Which of the following statements about grounded theory research is
true?
A. It is a method used to quantify theoretical constructs to support theory
development
B. It is used to support further research in areas where concrete data is
already known
C. It is used to generate a theory from data collected from research
participants
D. It is a study design that uses a theoretical basis to develop the
research question

researcher plans to conduct a study to understand the process of coping
during COVID-19 pandemic from the perspectives of clinical nurses, using the
constant comparison method. What qualitative research design did these
researchers use?
A. Case study
B. Grounded theory
C. Participatory action research
D. Ethnography
B
Researchers conducted a study to better understand the process by which
adolescents who have had leukemia transition back to school life after
hospitalization. The authors collected data from 20 adolescents over a 2-month
period. Periodically, after analyzing the data, they would conduct another round
of interviews. Which qualitative design did these researchers use?
A. Grounded theory
B. Phenomenology
C. Participatory action research
D. Ethnography
