Week 4 c Flashcards
What is Observational Studies?
Collecting data as they naturally occur. No manipulations of variables
What is Exploratory Research?
Systematic investigation of relationships among 2 or more variables
What is Prospective study?
Forward in time. Start to finish. Very Challenging
What is Retrospective study?
Go from results backwards
What is Longitudinal Research?
Over a long course of time
What is Cross Sectional Research?
Done immediately
What is Correlation/Predictive Study?
- Study based on covariation
- Does not imply causation
- When you see prediction think regressions
What is a Case Control Study?
- Subjects are selected Whether or not if they have a disorder or not
- Works well with rare conditions
- Cases–> Exposed to factor or not Exposed to factor
Controls–> Exposed to factor or not Exposed to factor - Retrospective
What is a Cohort Study?
- Subjects are selected whether or not if they are exposed to a factor
- Typically Prospective but can be either Prospective or Retrospective
- Examine if different incidence of disease
-Does not work well with rare diseases
Study Cohort–> exposed/not exposed –> develop disorder/does not develop disorder
What are the criteria to provide evidence of cause and effect?
- Time Sequence
- Strength of the association
- Biologic Credibility
- Consistency (w/ other studies)
- Dose response relationship
What is Methodological Research?
- Reliability
2. Validity
What are Reliability Studies?
- Rest-retest
- Intra/inter rater
- Inter consistency
What are Validity Studies?
- Criterion Validity (Concurrent/Predictive)
2. Construct Validity
What is Secondary Analysis?
- Uses existing data base to examine relationship b/w variables
- Big data projects
- Can combine comparable data sets
