week 4 b Flashcards
What is Single Subject Design?
- N of 1
- Require control groups and large # of homogenous subjects
- Allow Cause and effect
What are some limiting factors for N of 1?
- very time intensive
2. not feasible for clinicians
Independent variable
Treatment (level = phases)
Dependent Variable
Patient Response (Target Behavior)
Why does N of 1 differ from case studies/series?
- Repeat measurements
2. Design phases
What are the phases?
- Baseline
- Length
- Target Behavior
What is the Baseline phase?
- Evaluate for stability and Trend
- Stable vs Unstable
- Indicate change is occurring w/o intervention
What is Length of Phases?
- Can be flexible
- Important to extend phase until stability is reached
- min 3-4 data points for each phsse
- Best to have equal phase/interval length
- Can use summary assessments
What is Target Behavior?
- Dependent Variable
- Patient focused and subjective measures
- Quantitative and provide proof of reliability
What is Single Subject AB design?
Advantage: can observe change b/w A + B
Disadvantage: Unsure i fB was due to some confounding or maturation effect; learned effect
What is single subject ABA design?
Advantage: can determine if A truly caused B to occur since target behavior should return to baseline
Disadvantage: Behavior must be reversible: Ethical issues w/ withdrawal treatment
