How is identity and communication diverse?

A
  1. Diverse combinations of aspects of identity are relevant for an individual person or seen as or seen as relevant for other people. e.g. for one age, gender and religion might be the most important aspects, whereas for another being seen as disabled, same-sex attracted and black are the most relevant in their everyday life.
    There is diversity within different aspects of identity or categories of socio-cultural belonging

What is intersectionality?

A

Understanding that sociocultural categorization such as gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation do not operate in isolation from each other but are interdependent and can expose them to overlapping forms of discrimination e.g. sexual orientation are dependent on a binary understanding of gender. It reminds us that people are not only positioned in relation to one socio-cultural category e.g. gender diverse identify in other categories such as education, ethnicity.

A

If one is in a rural/remote town, have a hearing impairment or indigenous this may disallow them to access health services

A

Listen to the person, apply skills to understand where they are coming from, actively listen, express personally difficult stuff to connect, don’t be judgmental

How does societal pressure to speak another language impact how you feel about communication and identity?

A

People lose connection to their culture and identity due to having to learn and become part of a new one. This can cause loss of memories and culture as it gets lost in the western culture. This may impact communication styles as their new culture communicate in different ways.

A

philosophies, writing systems and literatures,
and to designate and retain their own names for
communities, places and persons.

that this right is protected and also to ensure
that indigenous peoples can understand and

the provision of interpretation or by other appropriate means.
