What is the IDDSI Framework? (International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative Framework)
- The IDDSI framework provides a common terminology to describe food textures and drink thickness
- A continuum of 8 levels, where drinks are measured 0-4 and foods measured 3-7
- Aims to meet the needs of individuals with dysphagia across the age span

What areas of the brain are involved in speech?
- Left and right lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital) involved in speech and language
- Wernicke’s area: temporal lobe, understanding and processing speech and written language
- Broca’s area: Located at the front of the left hemisphere of the brain, turns thoughts into spoken words, giving messages to the motor cortex
- Arcuate Fasciculus: The band of nerves connecting Wernicke’s and Broca’s
Cerebellum: Located at the back of the brain, coordinates voluntary muscle movements and language processing
What does damage to parts of the brain cause?
- Damage to one or more of these cause conditions that impact speech and language such as aphasia or dyspraxia
Linguistic vs Communication Competence?
- Ability to relay a message clearly using a language of choice
How much an individual understands the use of a certain language or languages
What is health?
- Physical
- Mental
- Social
- Human right to access the highest attainable standard of health
- Should not be dependent on religion, social status, economic status, political beliefs, race or severity of condition
Equality vs Equity in healthcare?
- Equity = treating patients in response to their unique needs
- Equality = treating all patients the same
- Gains are not shared across the whole population
Fairness does not mean everyone gets the same, fairness means everyone gets what they need
Personal vs Professional identity?
- Professional: the set of qualities and characteristics that define an individual as a member of a specific profession
Personal: unique experiences, values and beliefs
What does lack of access to SP in ATSI communities?
Communication, socialization, connection to culture, traditions, social isolation, lower mental health, malnutrition
