What is the IDDSI Framework? (International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative Framework)

A
  • The IDDSI framework provides a common terminology to describe food textures and drink thickness
    • A continuum of 8 levels, where drinks are measured 0-4 and foods measured 3-7
    • Aims to meet the needs of individuals with dysphagia across the age span

What areas of the brain are involved in speech?

A
  • Left and right lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital) involved in speech and language
    • Wernicke’s area: temporal lobe, understanding and processing speech and written language
    • Broca’s area: Located at the front of the left hemisphere of the brain, turns thoughts into spoken words, giving messages to the motor cortex
    • Arcuate Fasciculus: The band of nerves connecting Wernicke’s and Broca’s
      Cerebellum: Located at the back of the brain, coordinates voluntary muscle movements and language processing
