Discuss some common causes of menorrhagia

- Abnormal clotting (idiopathic thrombocytopenia)
- fibroids
- iatrogenic (copper coil)
- PCOS
- Cancer
- Progesterone contraception
- Obesity

What is a fibroid? In who are they more common? Why can it cause menorrhagia?
A
- Benign tumour of the smooth muscle occuring in myometrium of uterus
- Afro-carribean
- Increased BS to uterus

- Pregnancy
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Primary amenorrhea
- Cryptomenorrhea
- Tumous

Give some possible causes of primary amenorrhea
A
- Absent ovaries
- Primary ovarian failure pre-menarche
- Excess prolactin (shuts down HPO axis)

What is cyrptomenorrhea?
A
-Menstruation occurs but it is not visible due to obstruction
eg imperforate hymen, uterine interventions

-Endometrial pathology eg polyps
