WEEK 3 L6.1 rd- data Flashcards
types of data
1. primary vs. secondary
2. quanitative vs. qualitative (continum rather than a clear distinction)
3. data source: people (interview, survey, focus group) **vs. observation **(activities, field notes) **vs. documents **(text, audio) vs. secondary data (official statistics)
types of data by source (3)
- people: interviews, surveys, focus groups
- observation: activities, roll call votes, field notes
- documents: text, video, audio
- secondary data: official statistics, ‘rating agencies’
unit of analysis refers to…
the entity that’s studied (such as countries, individuals, conflicts, treaties, and policies)
* country => democracy => statistics
* individual => attitude => survey responses
* conflict => violence => ratings, statistics
units of analysis fallacies
example
aggregate level- no direct link
percentage of immigrants, and crime rate percentage
individual level- link possible
percentage of criminal immigrants
percentage of crimninal natives
- one is tempted to draw conclusions from the community level- to the individual level- this can go very wrong
ecological fallacy
unit of analysis fallacy
when characteristics of a population as a whole are attributed to groups within that population, without any real connection being demonstrated.
large unit => small unit
stereotypes based on ethnicity
individualistic or exception fallacy
unit of analysis fallacy
making a conclusion about a group of people based on observatios of one individual
small unit => large unit
