What are the characteristics of depression?
- depressed mood
- diminished interest in pleasure
- weight loss or gain
- insomnia or hypersomnia
- psychomotor agitation or retardation
- fatigue or loss of energy
- feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- diminished ability to think
- recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
What is the diagnostic criteria for depression
Presence of 5/9 symptoms for at least 2 weeks, depressed mood is a must
What does SIGECAPS stand for?
Sleep disturbance: decreased or increased
Interest or pleasure: decreased
Guilt or feeling worthless
(Mood : sustained low or depressed)
Energy loss or fatigue
Concentration problems or problems with memory
Appetite disturbance, weight loss or gain
Psychomotor agitation or retardation
Suicidal ideation, thoughts of death
What is a more chronic, low intensity mood disorder characterized by anhedonia, low self-esteem, and low energy and has a more psychologic than biologic etiology?
Dysthymia
