Week 3 (Bones) Flashcards
what are the 5 types of bones
Long – elongated, shaft plus two expanded ends
o Short – roughly cube shaped
Sesamoid – form in tendons
o Flat – thin flattened, usually slightly curved
o Irregular – complicated shapes
Gross Anatomy of Bones
- Compact bone
o Dense outer layer
o Smooth and solid - Spongy bone
o Internal to compact bone
o Honeycomb of trabeculae
o Contains red (and yellow)
bone marrow
Structure of Short, irregular and flat bones
Spongy bone between two layers of compact bone is called diploe (human skull)
3 cells of bone tissue (where from and what they do)
1) Osteblast: Create bone
2) Osteocytes: maintain bone matrix
3) Osteoclasts: Break bone bone
when does the epiphyseal plate close
between 18 - 25 years
what is the Epiphyseal plate
cartilage growth plate
What are the parathyroid glands
4 small glands attached to the back of the thyroid gland
what do parathyroid glands secrete and what is their effect
secrete parathyroid hormone (PTH) which simulates osteoclast activity (bone degredation) and therefore increases blood calcium levels) Ca+ released from bones
What are the two types of bone marrow, where they’re found and its purpose
The diagram is correct
