Week 1 Content (body cavities and Abdominopelvic Regions and Quadrants) Flashcards
What are the subdivisions of the Dorsal body cavity
Two (2) subdivisions:
1. Cranial cavity
* holds the brain
* formed by the skull
- Vertebral (or spinal) cavity
* Contains the spinal cord and spinal nerve roots
* formed by vertebral column
What are the subdivisions of the Ventral body cavity
- Thoracic cavity (above diaphragm)
- Abdominopelvic cavity (below
diaphragm)
Define viscera
Organs within the cavities
Define Diaphragm
Large, dome-shaped muscle
divides the ventral cavity.
Outline the sections of the Thoracic cavity
The superior mediastinum, Pericardial Cavity within the mediastinum, and the two pleural cavities on the side divided by the mediastinum.
Outline the sections of the abomino-pelvic cavity
Abdominal-pelvic cavity and the pelvic cavity

Name and diagram the lining of the pleural cavity
1) Visceral pleura clings to lung surface.
2) Pleural space
3) Parietal pleura lines chest wall.
(Visceral = surface of organ; Parietal = side/surface of
cavity wall)
**Visceral is very close to organ. Parietal is pretty close to organ.
Name and diagram the Pericardial cavities
1) Cardiac Muscle
2) Visceral pericardium, covers heart surface
– Secretes pericardial fluid
3) Parietal space
4) Parietal pericardium, lines pericardial sac.
