Q

Types to grow culture and what they are

A

1.Batch culture - Isolate in dish with 4 methods: Lag adapts to environment, Log cells grow, Stationary both rates the same Death, more cells die

  1. Continuous growth -Open system - nutrients supplied and waste removed
  2. Diauxic growth - uses two energy sources, uses up one THEN the other

Q

Name 3 main methods to monitor growth + adv/dis

A

Direct measurement - Count with chambers, quick but don’t know if cells are dead or alive

  1. Viable count Spread on petri dish to incubate, accurate but time consuming
  2. Dry weight, Precise but time consuming
  3. Turbudity Change in light uses spectrophotometer, quick bet measures ALL cells
