Bacteria Flashcards
Neisseria gonorrhoeae
GNB, dipoloccal
causes sti, infects mucosal layer of epithelial cells
spreads through sexual contact, bodily fluids and contamination
may cause infertility, can spread to other organs and cause septic arthiritisis
Lower abdominal pain, passing urine and bleading
Vibrio cholerae:
GN, faculative anaerobe, comma shaped
Uncooked food and contaminated h20
Causes intestinal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting
Leads to kidney failure
Prevented with sanitation, AB, hydration and vaccine available
Candida albicans
Yeast, Normal inhabitant of
human microbiome, GP
Cryptococcus neoformans
yeast, infections of HIV patients
Bacillus anthracis
Bacteria, causes anthrax
Gram positive, rod shaped
Associated with livestock
Chest discomfort and body aches
Vaccine available, infections treated with penicillin
Myobacterium tuberculosis
Rod shaped, GP, aerobic bacterium
spreads via droplets, speaking, coughing or shouting
non motile
May cause pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB
ESAS: Coughing, night sweats, chest pain, difficulty breathing
BCG vaccine available, fatal if left untreated,
contains a waxy coating of mycolic acid with high lipid concentration in cell wall
Complebacter jejuni
GN bacterium, spiral shaped , GIT
Food borne illness, spreads through respiratory droplets
uncooked poultry and animal faeces
fever and abdominal pain
Not usually life threatening
Linked with gullian-bare-syndrome
Will cause campylobacteriosis, symptoms usually last no more than a week
Antibiotics slow transmission of it
Neisseria meningitis
GNB, rod shaped, anaerobic and found in Pharynx
Diplococcus
Respiratory droplets, sexual contact, sneezing, coughing
Infects cells by attaching to their pilli
causes sepsis, fever headaches and rashes
Menigococcal vaccine
clostridium botulinum
GP, rod shaped anaerobic found in soil, spore forming, motile
produces botulinum toxin, causes paralysis, transmitted via ingestion or wounds
Associated with canned products
Anti-botulinum toxin
E coli
GNB, rod shaped, anaerobic
Found in gut flora, soil water and faeces
spreads through contamination can cause GITI
Can cause stomach pain, fever, diarrhoea
No specific treatment but antibiotics, important to be hydrated, consume electrolytes
Salmonella entriditis
4
GN, rod shaped, anerobic,
Found in intestinal tract of animals
Uncooked meats, spreads via contaminated food
fever and nausea
Tryponsonoma brucei
Causes sleeping sickness, protazoan
staph areus
GP, cocci found on skin
bacterium that is usually harmless
Thiomargarita nambiensis
GN, spherical shaped
Found in sulphur rich environments
Trepanema pallidium
Causes STI sphylis
GN and spiral shaped bacterium
