week 2 neuroanatomy and neural transmission Flashcards
CNS:
clusters of cell bodies are called _____ and bundles of axons are called _______
CNS:
nuclei; tracts
PNS:
clusters of cell bodies are called _____ and bundle of axons are called _______
PNS:
ganglia; nerves
how do neurons communicate
- neurons communicate through electochemical signals
- signals are generatd by changing the resting membrane potential of a neuron
- signals are sent through the neuron and across the synapse to the next neuron
depolarisation vs hyperpolarisation
depolarisation = increased liklihood of firing
hyperpolarisation = decreased likihood of firing
action potentials are
all or none.
threshold around -65mV to generate AP
absolute vs relative refractory period
Absolute = short period of time during which no other AP can be elicited
refractory = follows the absolute refractory period during which an AP can be elicited
APs travel in only one direction
APs travel from the
cell body to the terminal buttons
