additonal brain damage content Flashcards
what is the infleunce of repeated mild tbi (repeated concussions)
effects of mTBI can last many years and the effects of repeated mtbi can accumulate.
most footballers, rugby players can end up with Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is the dementia and cerebal scaring
inflammation of the brain (prescribed reading)
inflammation of the brain typically comes from infections: bacterial or viral. Either way, the inflammation always called encephalitis (inflammation of brai)
describe the different types of brain tumours and explain the difference between an encapsukated and an infiltrating brain tumour
a tumour (neoplasm) is a mass of cells that grows independently of the rest of the body.
menigiomas = tumours that grow between the meninges. All menigiomas are encapsulated tumours (grow within their own membrane). almost always benign
infiltrating= tumours that grow diffusely through surronding tissue. usually malignant (difficult to remove and destroy fully)
gliomas = brain tumours that develop from glial cells. they are infiltrating and most common of the malignant brain tumors
metastic = grow from infiltrating cells that are then carried to the brain.
what happens when we do have damage to to central nervou system
so we have process of
degeneration - neural deterioration and death)
regeneration - the re growwh of damaged neurons
reorganisation -
appreicate basics around these
recovery of function
difficult to measure - most poeple with most injuries we dont have a basline. however things like cognitivr reserve and neural regeneration (hippocampus)
