WEEK 1 LECTURE CONTENT Flashcards
what are the 2 divisions of the nervou system
1: central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
2: peripheral nervous system (somatic nervou system and autonomic nervous system)
sympathetic and parasympatheric nervous system
sympathetic = responsible for psycholoigcal arousal states and projects out from the middle section of the back - lumbar and thoraic)
parasympathetic = responsible for psychological relaxation and projects out from either the brain or the sqacral areas of the spine
What are meninges
membranes around the brain
dura mater -> tough membrane
arachnoid menix -> spider like membrane
pia mater -. delicate, sticks to the surface of the cerebral cortex
cerebrospinal fluid
fills the subarachnoi space, the central canal of the spinal cord and the 4 cerebral ventricles - acts as a shock absorber
sulcus and fissure
sulcus = small furrow
fissure = large furrow
groove or gyrus = bump or ridge
frontal lobe
exectutive functioning, thinkingm planning, organising, problem solving, emotions and behavioural control, personality
temporal lobe
memory, underestanding and language
parietal lobe
perception, making sense of the world, arithmetic and spelling
lymbic system
thought to be involved in motivated behaviour e.g. feeding, fighting, flight, and fuck)
amygdala and hippocampus
basal ganglia
voluntary motor responses and decision making
thalamus and hypothalamus
thalamus = sensory relay nuclei of visual, auditory and somatosensory systems that project info in two way fashion
hypothalamus= implicated in motivated behavioru e.g. eating, sleeping,) through hormone regulation interactiong with pituitary gland
optic chiasm
points where optic nerves meet
inferior vs superiour colliculi
Inferior = auditory
superiour = visual
