Week 2 - Lymphatics Flashcards
How many lymphatic ducts are there?
What are they called?
2:
- Left = thoracic duct
- Right = right lymphatic duct
How do LNs filter substances? (3 marks)
- Physical web of reticular tissue
- Macrophages
- +++ lymphocytes
What are the key features of the lymphatic system (3 marks)?
Flow is unidirectional
Low pressure
No pump
Name the superficial LNs of the head and neck
- Submental
- Submandibular
- Preauricular
- Postauricular
- Occipital
- Superficial cervical LNs - superficial/posterior/anterior
Name the deep cervical LNs of the head and neck
Jugulo-digastric
Jugulo-omohyoid
Supraclavicular
Which LN is known as the tonsillar node?
The jugulo-digastric
What is Virchow’s node?
Why is it significant?
Left Supraclavicular lymph node - drains abdomen and thorax.
Enlarges in gastric malignancy
What is Waldeyer’s Ring?
- Annular collection of lymphatic tissues surrounding the superior pharynx
- Arranged as collections of nodules - tonsils
Describe the route of flow of lymph through the various vessels
Lymphatic capillary –> Afferent lymph vessel –> LN –> efferent lymph vessel –> lymphatic trunks –> lymphatic ducts
