Week 2 Lecture Flashcards
What injuries are involved in the terrible triad of the elbow?
- Posterior dislocation
- coronoid fracture of Ulna
- Radial head fracture
At what elbow position is there no bony contact between the radius and capitellum?
Full extension
At what elbow position is the MCL providing a majority of valgus stability
90 degrees flexion
What three movements does the LCL aid to resist?
- varus (some)
- distraction
- posterior radial head fracture
What provides most of the protection against varus forces at the elbow ?
Bony articulations
List 5 common causes of medial elbow pain
- Flexor/pronator tendinopathy
- MCL sprain - acute or chronic
- Ulnar nerve compression
- Pronator syndrome
- Referred pain - c-spine, t-spine
What muscles should be strengthened with MCL sprains?
Pronators and flexors
What movement will be provocative for ulnar nerve compression
sustained flexion
List 5 common causes of lateral elbow pain
- Extensor tendinopathy
- Spine referred pain
- PIN
- Radial tunnel syndrome
- radiohumeral bursitis
list 3 strength findings for an extensor tendinopathy
- reduced grip strength
- wrist extension painful or weak
- 3rd MCP extension painful or weak
Differe presentation between PINS and RTS
RTS = Pain
PINS = Pain and weakness
List 3 common causes of posterior elbow pain
- Olecranon Bursitis
- Triceps tendinopathy
- Posterolateral impingement
What is the most important dynamic stabiliser of the medial elbow
FCU
Lateral elbow tendinopathy - If 3rd digit extension is more provocative than wrist extension, what muscles are likely implicated ?
- Extensor digitorum
