What age is the common onset ?
20 - 30 years
How will inflammatory back pain respond with regards to physical activity ?
It improves with activity but not with rest
How will someone with inflammatory back pain respond to NSAIDS
Generally, it will alleviate their pain
What other joint is commonly painful with inflammatory back pain
Cervical spine
Palpation of what peripheral structures can also be indicative of inflammatory conditions relating to back pain
Enthesis
With regards to timeframe, how will inflammatory back pain present
Insidious onset, greater than 3 months
What is considered to be an “at risk” patient for Axial Spondyloarthritis
Patient with back pain for 3 months or greater, with an age of onset of less than 45 years old
Presence of any one of what factors for an at risk patient would indicate referral to Rheumatologist ?
- IBP
- Imaging evidence of sacroiliitis
- Peripheral manifestations
- Family history of SPA
- Extra articulate manifestations e.g. inflammatory bowel signs
- Good response to NSAIDs
