Week 2: Intro to Research Flashcards
Characteristics of Research
- Systemic: problems,methods, conclusions, interpretations
- Logical: others can evaluate and draw conclusions
- Empirical: others can draw conclusions
- Reductive: data used to establish more general relationships
- Replicate:research process is recorded and others can repeat or build on research
Four Philosophical Worldviews 1
*Post positivism- single reality and objective truth. Research unbiased (surveys and experiments) QUANTITATIVE
*Constructivism-multiple realities and meanings varied
-focus on complexity of views rather than narrow
-researchers background shape interpretations
QUALITATIVE
Four Philosophical Worldviews 2
*Transformative- intertwined with politics and political agenda. Focus on actions and reform that might change lives of the participants in study, Researchers work collaboratively w participant
QUALITATIVE
*Pragmatism
Role philosophical Worldviews play in shaping research in Kin
- Ways to improve human health
- Figure out own worldview
- Critical thinking
- Surveys about healthy
Characterizing Scientific Methods
- Developing the problem(independent and dependent variables)
- Formulating hypothesis: anticipate outcome
- Gathering data:internal vs. external validity
- Analyzing and Interpreting results
3 Forms of Research Questions in Quantitative Research
- Comparing groups: male vs. female self esteem levels
- Relating independent vs dependent variable: relationship b/w obesity and sports
- Describe responses/status on a variable:rate of concussions among athletes
Define quantitative:
theory testing, describing status on variables and looking at relations among variables. Have research questions to shape and focus study
Define qualitative:
Exploring and understanding meanings ascribed by individual or group.Generation of themes from the particulars. Researcher is part of meaning making process
