[Week 2] Conducting Psychological Research in the Real World Flashcards
ambulatory assessment
assessment of behavior and experience in naturalistic settings
daily diary method
A methodology where participants complete a questionnaire about their thoughts, feelings, and behavior of the day at the end of the day.
day reconstruction method
participants describe behavior on a given day, and it is reconstructed on the following day
ecological momentary assessment
repeated sampling of real-world experiences in real time
ecological validity
study findings closely related to normal, everyday behavior
electronically activated recorder
participants wear an audio recorder that records ambient sound
experience-sampling method
participants report on thoughts, feelings, and behaviors multiple times per day
external validity
research finding generalizes specific sample to a larger population
full-cycle psychology
field research (naturalistic) compared to lab research (artificial) to verify effects and isolate causes, returning to field research in the end
generalize
Generalizing, in science, refers to the ability to arrive at broad conclusions based on a smaller sample of observations. For these conclusions to be true the sample should accurately represent the larger population from which it is drawn.
internal validity
cause and effect between two variables is established
linguistic inquiry and word count
quantitative analysis; extracts information from text and focuses on word frequencies
lived day analysis
participants are recorded to objectively document a person’s life
white coat hypertension
A phenomenon in which patients exhibit elevated blood pressure in the hospital or doctor’s office but not in their everyday lives.
