Cultural Intentionality
awareness of cultural differences that exist between a counsellor and their client. Counsellors are flexible in their practice and use a variety of skills and alternatives; they honor and respect diverse cultural beliefs
Cultural Safety
achieved when people of diverse backgrounds feel safe and respected from discrimination.
Cultural Sensitivity
grows when we start to see influences of our culture and acknowledge our biases. Not about treating everybody the same.
Define bracketing
Managing your personal values so they do not contaminate/affect the counseling process.
Define professional burnout
- when experiences at work begin to weigh on your vitality as person
- You cannot control stressful events
- You CAN control your interpretation and reaction to these events
Define self monitoring
- keeping track of how well you are taking care of yourself, how you are coping/managing with work stressors
- Self care is essential
- Are you taking care of yourself to the same degree that you expect your clients to be taking care of themselves?
Define value imposition
refers to counselors directly attempting to define a client’s values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors; may impose their values either directly or indirectly, or intentionally or without awareness
