Week 19 Introduction to matrices and vectors Flashcards
What is a vector?
It is an ordered list of numbers, which we enter into brackets, which is called entries of a vector.
What are the 2 types of vectors?
Column vectors and row vectors
Are vectors that have different order enteries in a vector the same?
Are these the same?
Nope both are column vectors but that different order entries in the vectors.
Why do we use vectors?
Vectors can be used to express information about a number of different quantities in a compact mathematical way.
What does this show?
We have 5 apples 3 bananas and 4 oranges
What is a scalar?
It is some quanitity that is not a vector. It could be a number ( like 6) or a variable like x. We can mutiply a scalar by a vector.
When we add to vectors is x + y the same as y+ x vector ( in the exam we denote the name of a vector by underlining the vector?
Nope they are not the same.
What is a matrix?
Is a rectangular array of numbers arranged in rows and columns
How do we transpose this matrix?
We swap the rows into columns
