Define feminism
Feminism is concerned with gender inequalities that arise from a system of patriarchy, with women and men having fundamentally different experiences and access to power and privilege
What are some examples of feminism in everyday life?
- the right to vote
- equal access to education
- the right to choose what to wear
- parents sharing the housework
- boys and girls having the same opportunities
- free and fair workplace
What is associated with radical feminism?
- patriarchal society
- blames men for female exploitation
- rape, violence and pornography are how men have secured power over women
- believes in potential for gender differences to be eradicated
What is associated with marxist feminism?
- capitalism rather than patriachary
- women are disadvantaged due to private property
- believe there is scope for co-operation between working class women and men
- primary goal to eradicate capitalism
What is associated with liberal feminism?
- nobody benefits from existing inequities
- gender inequality is due to structures and institutions of society buts its culture and values
- seek for change within the existing structure
- want equal opportunity through policy
- have had the most impact on womens lives
What is associated with postmodern feminism?
- women not seen as a single homogenous group
- differences in women from different classes
- concerned with language and the relationships between power and knowledge rather than politics and opportunities
What is pink tax?
Means all kinds of items geared at women cost more, approx 7% higher, also seen by tampon tax
How else are women suffering?
- make less money than men
- workplace sexual harassment
- women are underrepresented in the government
What are the health differences for women?
- female pain taken less seriously
- women have longer waiting times for things like abdo pain
- often not seen at all/discharged early despite serious medical issues
- drugs are not the correct dosage as they are designed for male bodies
What is gender bias?
A component of sexism which is a major cause in inequity worldwide, its a well documented problem that endangers peoples lives and wellbeing
