Week 1: The brain Flashcards
What are the 5 different brain lobes?
- frontal
- parietal
- occipital
- temporal
- cerebellum
What are the two brain matters?
Gray matter and white matter
What are the deeper structures of the brain?
Hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, basal ganglia, limbic system
What does the frontal lobe control?
- problem solving/planning/judgement
- personality/behaviour/emotions
- speech/speaking/writing
- body movement
- intelligence/concentration/self-awareness
What does the parietal lobe control?
- Interprets words, touch, pain and temperature
- interprets signals from vision, hearing, motor, sensory and memory
- spatial and visual perception
What does the occipital lobe control?
- interprets information from the eyes
- distance, depth, colour, light, and other vision aspects
What does the temporal lobe control?
- understanding language
- memory
- hearing
- sequencing and organisation
What does the cerebellum control?
- motor movement
- balance
- gait
- posture
- muscle tone
- voluntary muscle activity
What does the hypothalamus control?
- autonomic nervous system
- hunger, thirst, sleep, sexual response, regulation of temperature, BP, emotions and secretion of hormones
What does the pituitary gland control?
- endocrine system and responds to stress
What does the pineal gland control?
- internal clock/ circadian rhythms
What does the Thalamus control?
- pain, alertness, memory
What does the basal ganglia control?
- coordinates fine motor control
What does the limbic system control?
- emotions, learning and memory
Where is short term memory stored?
Prefrontal cortex
