week 12 Flashcards

1
Q

A

our bodies endogenous cannabinoid

short-acting
acts on inhibitory pathways mediating dopamine release

Q

How does heroin work?

A

Heroin mimics natural opiates, binding to opiate receptors - which when activated prevent the release of INHIBITORY NEUROTRANSMITTERS.

The inhibitory neurotransmitters ordinarily prevent the release of DOPAMINE, which can now flood the synapse

Q

How does ecstasy work?

A

Ecstasy mimics serotonin and is taken up by serotonin transporters (which usually remove serotonin from the synapse).

This confuses the transporter, which starts to work in reverse, transporting serotonin out into the synapse where it becomes trapped overstimulating cell

Q

How does marijuana work?

A

THC mimics anandamide binding to cannabinoid receptors, turning of inhibitory neurotransmitters which prevent the release of dopamine.

This means more dopamine

Q

How does methamphetamine work?

A

Meth mimics dopamine and is taken into the synaptic cleft by dopamine transports. Once inside it enters the dopamine vesicles, forcing dopamine out…. the excess dopamine is then released via the transporters working in reverse

Q

How does alcohol work?

A

binds to GABA receptors making them more inhibitory and also Binds to GLUTAMATE to prevent cell excitation.

Double suppressant

Q

How does cocaine work?

Q

How does LSD work?

A

Resembles serotonin and binds to serotonin receptors

Reacts with various types of serotonin receptors but not always in the same way. some of them it may excite, some it may inhibit.
