week 11 researh methods Flashcards
What is analysis of variance
is a parametric test, Compares mean scores across conditions. 2+ condition
What is one-way within subjects ANOVA
Extension of a within subjects t-test/paired samples t-test.
Same group of participants tested in three or more conditions
What is one-way between subjects ANOVA
Extension of an independent t-test/between subjects t-test
Three or more different groups of participants
What is a factor
the independent variable
What is a level
the separate conditions present within the factor
What is our aim
to summarise our data set. Calculate appropriate inferential statistics
Allow us to draw conclusions
What are our steps
Calculate the descriptive statistics
identify whether the data meet the assumptions for our chosen test
Calculate the f value
identify whether the result is significant
Reject or fail to reject the Null- hypothesis
write up
Why do we do post-Hoc tests
calculating several t-tests is not appropriate as it increases the probability of a type 1 error
What are post-hoc and when do we use them
Use if we have significant f value. In this design you will be using Tukey test for between-subjects design
What is Kruskal-Wallis test for
for IVs with 3 or more conditions between-subjects design
What is Post-Hoc test
Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction
When is ANOVA robust enough to deal with violations of normality
when group size are equal
What test do we use in a one-way between-subjects ANOVA
we use a Post-hoc Tukey test
There is no such test with a Kruskal-Wallis.
Instead we use multiple Mann-Whitney test . Instead we use multiple Mann-whitney tests and a Bonferroni correction
