Week 11 Flashcards
What is mixed method?
combining qualitative and quantitative data in one study
What are the four mixed method approaches?
convergent, sequential, multiphase, embedded
What is convergent mixed method?
quantitative and qualitative run concurrently but separately with results converged during analysis/interpretation to compare/contrast
results usually reported together
What are the positives and negatives of a convergent study?
+ direct comparison, validate or expand quantitative with qualitative, well-substantiated conclusions
- researcher must be skilled in both types of research
What is sequential mixed method?
one study is completed before the other, one study is used to identify key issues then use the other study to go deeper
What are the positives and negatives of a sequential study?
+ patterns identified in first phase can be explored in second, separate components mean each study can stay true to methodology requirements
- takes a long time
What is a multiphase study?
different studies to answer same question in a population with different sizes
What are the positives and negatives of a multiphase study?
+ in-depth understanding of a complex problem from different POV
- complex data interpretation, results often not reported together
What is an embedded study?
combination of quantitative and qualitative research
What are the positives and negatives of an embedded study?
+ useful quotes to back up quantitative data
- qualitative usually supplementary to quantitative, not usually in-depth
