Why does the best evidence change over time?
new research and insights that are regularly being conducted and discussed to help further our knowledge and evidence
What is evidence-based practice?
The conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients
What is the triad approach?
- best possible evidence
- clinical expertise
- patient values and preferences
What does good evidence need to be?
valid, accurate, current, applicable
What are the 4 types of decision making?
- decision making by anecdote
- decision making by press-cutting
- decision making by expert opinion
- decision making by cost minimisation
What is validity?
the extent to which a tool or instrument measures what it is supposed to measure
What is reliability?
the degree to which a tool or instrument produces consistent or similar results
How often is research updated?
at least every 3-5 years
What is clinical expertise?
-taking into account personal and professional experiences to help guide patient treatment
What is research?
focused, systematic enquiry aimed at generating new knowledge
What 3 parts should a good clinical question include?
- define who the question is about?
- which treatment are you considering?
- define the desired/undesired outcome
