Week 10 Flashcards
What is qualitative research?
aims to seek a deeper truth by studying things in their natural setting, preserves complexities of human behaviour
How is validity of a qualitative design improved?
- more than one method used
- reflexivity: thinking about how own perspective may influence data
- include more than one researcher - inter-rater reliability
What are the 4 qualitative research designs?
phenomonology, grounded theory, ethnography, case studies
Phenomonology
how people interpret lived experiences, perceptions and understandings of an event
Grounded theory
starts with no preconceptions and develops themes and ideas as data is collected and analysed
Ethnography (passive/participate observation)
watching behaviours and conversations in naturally-occurring settings, study of cultures and people
Case studies
looks at individuals, a small group of people or a group as a whole, explores people and behaviours based on a defined research question
What are the data collection methods of qualitative research?
interviews, audio/visual materials, observations, documents
Interviews
gain further insight from participants, explore questions in more depth, query previous findings, gain further understanding, can be one-on-one or in a group
Observations
passive or embedded
What is being native?
fully immersed in culture studying
What is going native?
lines between researcher and participant and blurred
