What is perseveration?
- Persistent repeating of verbal or motor response, even with varied stimuli
- “I am going to lock the door, lock the door. Every day I walk my dog and walk the door.”
What is clanging?
- Word choice based on sound, not meaning
- “My feet are cold. Cold, bold, told.”
What distinguishes delirium from dementia?
- Delirium is acute, cannot be explained by neurocognitive disorder, requires direct physiological consequence of another medical condition (intoxication, withdrawal)
- Dementia is progressive degenerative disease caused by damage to brain cells.
What are the differences between bipolar I and bipolar II?
- Bipolar I = mania and hypomania (irritability and increased energy without more extreme features of mania) with episodes of depressed mood
- Bipolar II = hypomania and depressed mood (no mania)
What is the distinction between mood and affect?
- mood is a subjective description of emotional state (prolonged)
- affect is outward expression and objective signs (current)
What is the definition and components of major depressive disorder?
- At least two weeks
- At least 4 of: fatigue, loss of energy, insomnia, oversleeping, feelings of worthlessness, weight fluctuations
