Structures of the CNS Flashcards
What are the functions of the frontal lobe?
- Personality
- Emotions
- Behavior
- Intellectual function
What does the precentral gyrus do?
Initiates voluntary motion
What does the postcentral gyrus control?
Sensation
Function of the occipital lobe?
Visual reception
What happens in the temporal lobe?
Primary auditory reception center
Where is Wernicke’s area? Function?
- Temporal lobe
- Language comprehension
- Receptive aphasia if damaged
Where is Broca’s area? Function?
- Frontal lobe
- Motor speech
- Expressive aphasia if damaged
What does the basal ganglia control?
Automatic associated movements of the body
What does the cerebellum/cerebellar system control?
- Coordination of voluntary movement and equilibrium
- Posture
What does the spinothalamic tract transmit? What are its tracts?
- Lateral tract: pain and temp
- Anterior tract: crude/light touch
- Decuss in spinal cord
What sensation does the posterior (dorsal) column transmit?
Where does it decussate?
- Position, vibration, finely localized touch
- Decussates at medulla
What are the functions of the corticospinal/pyramidal tract?
- Voluntary motor (skilled/purposefull)
- Descends lateral column (except 10% that do not decussate -> anterior columb)
- 90% decussate at medulla
What does the extrapyramidal system control?
- Muscle tone, gross automatic movements
- Primitive
