Bactericidal through interference w/ enzymes required for synthesis and repair of bacterial DNA and promotes breakage of DNA strands

A

HA, insomnia, dizziness, N/V/D, phototoxicity

Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, tendinitis, tendon rupture, c. diff

Fluoroquinolones (-floxacin): caution and contraindications

A
  • BLACK BOX: tendon rupture and tendonitis
  • Risk for QT prolongation
  • Avoid in patients with myasthenia gravis
  • Caution in renal and hepatic impairment
  • Caution in elderly (dose reduce)
  • Caution in pregnancy and lactation (avoid in patients <18 years)

Why can’t fluroquinolones be used to treat gonorrhea and TB anymore?

A

Increasing resistance because of overprescribing
