– make long-term decisions, future oriented, need to be alert of long-term opportunities/problems, often known as CEO, president
Middle managers?
– implement those decisions, supervise/coordinate first-line managers. Can be seen as barrier to quick decision making and risk to create mangers focused on ‘empire building’
First line managers?
– make short-term decisions. Directing task of non-managerial personnel
or non-managerial personnel
Functional managers?
o responsible for one activity
o Responsible for just one organisational activity
o E.g. Marissa Mayers (CEO of Yahoo), formally Google’s Vice President of Search Products and User Experience (specialised research and development activity)
General managers?
o responsible for several organisational activities
o CEOs can be considered general managers
