Syndrome
Causes impairment in functioning/notabele stress to self or others
It is operationalized in terms of a diagnosis. It is a predefined set of symptoms.
Behavior
Depends on the person and their situation -> change in behavior is interesting (investigating through 2 factor theory Mowrer)
Two Factor theory of Mowrer: avoidance learning contains 2 processes
- Classical conditioning: stimuli that first are neutral get meaning. One learns to fear a previously neutral stimulus.
- Operant conditioning: opvolgend gedrag wordt in stand gehouden door (positieve of negatieve) reinforcement. The stimulus that causes anxierty is avoided. This bring relief of negative emotions, anxiety = maintained!
Clinical psychology integrates science and clinical knowledge
Knowledge -> data as raw observations
