Q

What is the vagus nerve for? Is it sensory, motor or both?

A

Controls peripheral nervous system

Motor

Supplies pharynx and velar muscles (for swallowing)

larynx (for voice/sound)

Sensory

(touch, pressure, pain) from the larynx and pharyngeal region as well as from the ear drum and external ear.

Q

What is the hypoglossal nerve for? Is it sensory, motor or both?

A

Moving tonge and allows you to form speech and swallowing. (Motor)

17
Q

What are the three branches of the trigeminal nerve?

A
  1. Ophthalmic (CN V1) - sensory (touch, pressure, pain)
  2. Maxillary (CN V2) - sensory (touch, pressure, pain)
  3. Mandibular (CN V3) - mixed (touch, pressure, pain + muscles of mastication)

21
Q

What a re the branches of the facial nerve?

A
22
Q

Define GENERAL or SPECIAL as they relate to peripheral nerves

A
  • GENERAL (G): Relates to structures that are NOT considered SPECIAL (eg. General movement, general senses, pain, temperature, touch, pressure, vibration, proprioception)
  • SPECIAL (S): Relates to structures that ARE considered SPECIAL (vision, hearing, taste, balance)
23
Q

Define SOMATIC or VISCERAL as they relate to peripheral nerves

A
  • SOMATIC (S): Relates to structures that are classified as coming from the SOMITE: skin, skeletal muscle, bone
  • VISCERAL (V): Relates to structures that are classified as ORGANS: organs such as kidney, liver, stomach as well as glands, smooth muscle
24
Q

Define EFFERENT or AFFERENT as they relate to peripheral nerves

A
  • EFFERENT (E): A neuron that sends action potentials AWAY from the CNS – involved in controlling effector end organs (somatic or visceral)= motor neurons
  • AFFERENT(A): A neuron that sends action potentials TOWARDS the CNS – involved in SENSING structures (somatic or visceral) = sensory neurons
