week 1/2 Flashcards
what is the difference between evidence based practice and evidence informed practice
evidence based: current research, only fact (stats, positivist)
Evidence informed: nursing process used to guide stuff (clinical judgment, person centred)
what forms of research are involved in evidence BASED practice
quantitative
what forms of research are involved in evidence informed practice
quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods
how do we use evidence informed practice as nurses
using assessments to guide practice, clinical judgment
what is the hierarchy of evidence research
- umbrella review (number one always)
- systematic review
- randomised control trials
- quantitative, qualitative, cohort
- case report
- position paper
- expert opinion
- anecdotal info
what are the six steps of evidence informed practice
step 0: cultivate a “spirit of inquiry”
step 1: ask a burning question
step 2: search for synthesis
step 3: critical appraisal of studies found in the research
step 4: if there is enough evidence integrate into practice
step 5: evaluate how it went
step 6: disseminate outcomes
(if there is not enough evidence generate external evidence and integrate into your study, then proceed with steps 5 and 6)
what are the two main research paradigms
constructivist and positivist
what are the main characteristics of the constructivist paradigm
- subjective
- inductive approach (open options)
- participants
- one truth if we could measure it
what are the main characteristics of the positivist paradigm
- objective
- researcher at a distance
- deductive
- subjects
one truth that can be objectively arrived at
what do constructivists call the people involved in their studies
participants
what do positivists call ppl involved in their studies
subjects
