how to read research literature Flashcards
what does the abstract do
provides a general overview of the study
what are a few things about the abstract that make it unreliable
- does not provide results
- limited by word count
what is the purpose of the intro and background of a study
- focuses on the issue being investigated as well as the paradigm and rationale behind the search
what are the methods/type of research design
basically how the research will be conducted
- type of research may not be explicitly stated but usually obvious from design
how is the research question and methodology related
research question drives methodology and not the other way around
whats the difference between the methods and procedures of a study
methods: steps taken in the study
procedures: how the steps are executed
whats the difference between a population and a sample
population: entire group of individuals that a researcher is interested in studying (target audience)
sample: subset of population selected to participate in the study
provide an example of the difference between population and sample
in a study with asthma, population will be all individuals with asthma in Canada
sample will consist of 200 people with asthma that are participating in the study
what are some important things that may be included in methods and procedures
how data was collected
how participants were recruited
how analysis was conducted to generate findings
what is rigour
how did researchers mitigate bias in their work
what is results or findings in a research paper
how are findings presented to you
may be via tables, graphs, narrative, etx
what is included in the discussion of a research paper
- should highlight the main findings and relate to broader literature
where would you find limitations in a research study and how many should there be (minimum)
you can find it in the discussion section
usually 1-2 limitations
what is included in conclusion section of a research paper
very broad summary and final impactful statement related to topic or issue
where can you find the ethical considerations in a research paper
type of research design
