terminiology
Define physical activity
All leisure & non leisure movement produced by skeletal muscle & increases energy expenditure above resting levels (above 1.5 METs).
Define health
our total physical, social, & psychological status. Ranging from positive to negative.
Define physical fitness
Set of attributes that people have that relates to ability to perform physical activity with optimal efficiency.
2 categories of physical fitness
- general- a state of well being
- specific- task orientated based on ability to perform specific aspects of a sport or physically demanding occupation.
Define health related fitness
physical fitness achieved through exercise.
Define performance related fitness
physical training for a specific task
Define exercise
planned, structured, repetitive body movement where the primary objective is to improve or maintain physical fitness
Define physical inactivity
an insufficient physical activity level to meet current physical activity recommendations <150 min/week
Define sedentary behaviour
any waking activity with an energy expenditure of <1.5METs while in a seated, lying or reclined posture.
Examples of sedentary behaviour
reading, TV viewing, computer use, driving, video game playing.
Define prolonger
someone who accumulates sedentary time in extended continuous bouts (watches TV for 3hrs straight)
Define breaker
Someone who accumulates sedentary time with frequent interruptions and in short bouts
What are some risks of sedentary behaviour?
Risk of type 2 diabetes
CVD
Obesity
Frailty
decrease in cardiovasc. fitness
decrease in musculoskel. fitness
decrease in academic achiement
decrease in self esteem & mental well being
Define sitting
postion which someone’s weight is supported by their buttocks rather than feet & back is upright
Health risks of sitting?
organ damage
muscle degeneration
bad back
leg disorders (varacose veins)
Trouble with the brain
what is a dose-response relationship?
with a certain dose of something there is a known response. EX Increase in sitting for a long time (dose) there is an increase of all cause mortality (response).
Define screen time
Time spent on screen based behaviours
What does healthy sleep consist of?
Adequate duration, quality, appropriate timing & absence of sleep disorders
Tips for sleep hygiene
- go to bed/wake up at same time
2.avoid caffiene/alcohol/smoking in late afternoon - Bedroom should be dark, quiet & cool
- reserve your room for sleeping only
- don’t go to bed hungry or too full
- develop bedtime routine
7.expose yourself to sunlight in the morning
