Motivation & Self Determination Theory Flashcards
Define motivation
degree of determination, drive/desire which an individual approaches a behaviour
3 parts to motivation
- intensity-ones effort/energy
- direction- where effort is channeled
- persistence- tendancy to strive for success & maintain the effort
Define origins
the energy that directs our behaviour (where the motivation comes from)
2 types of origins
- Intrinsic- internal desire do to something for joy/satisfaction
- Extrinsic- motivation scourced in external outcome or reward
Explain self determination theory (SDT)
Control based approach to understanding why we do what we do & How different types/qualities of motivation lead to different outcomes
Central theme of SDT
not all motivation is equal.
3 needs of SDT
- autonomy- feeling in control of ones choices (choices)
- competence- feel mastery/confident in ability (ques/demonstrations)
- relatedness-sense of belonging in social aspects (ice breakers)
SDT 3 Main Levels
- Amotivation
- Extrinsic motivation
- Intrinsic Motivation
Amotivation
no drive or intention to engage in the new behaviour
-often had bad experience in past
-forced to change behaviour by others, not self will
External regulation
External
motivated by external forces, sees no personal value in the behaviour, does it for reward or to avoid punishment
introjected regulation
somewhat external
no longer needs rewards from external scources
-does behaviour to avoid feeling of guilt
Identified regulation
somewhat internal
does behaviour because they see the personal benefit from doing it, but does not enjoy it.
-doesn’t need rewards to coercion to do the behaviour
Integrated Regulation
internal
-goals are assimilated with self identity and values
-very similar to intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation/regulation
Intrinsic
-Engages for enjoyment and interest
-satisfaction is seperate from benefits/gains of doing the behaviour
