Assessing motivation & readiness Flashcards
Why doesn’t expert advice result in change behaviour?
The person isn’t ready for change/may not even realize they need to change.
Important things to find out about your client
-what type of client are you working with (high or low fitness/coachablility)
-what is their motive to meeting with you
-are they ready for change?
-what barriers do they have (past experiences…)
-what do they expect the outcome of their program will be?
-what motivates them to start/keep going?
High commitment words
try, want, commit
low commitment words
like, hope, wish
Transtheoretical model stages of change
-pre contemplation
-contemplation
-preparation
-action
-maintenance
-relapse/termination
How do people move through the TTM stages
shift in decisional balance & increased self efficacy to overcome temptation
explain “shift in decisional balance”
shift in perceptions of pro and con’s of the behaviour
explain “increased self efficacy to overcome temptations”
confidence in ability to overcome issues of relapse into old behaviour
Pre-contemplation stage
-no intention to change now or within the next 6 months
-unaware or under aware
-defensive/denial to change
-low efficacy
process of change (2)
- experiential- knowledge, consequences, awareness and benefits. Used in early behaviour change stages, based on past experiences.
- Behavioural- addressing the environment, getting support, rewards, committing/contract. Later stages of behaviour change (action & maintenance).
comtemplation
thinking about changing
- low self confident
-intending to change
Increase intention to action by addressing ambivalence, highlight the benefits, build self efficacy
Preparation
Serious about making changes
-may be modifying behaviour already, needs support.
-help them plan, set target dates, focus on pro’s, provide resources to help them
Action
made a change but need more help
-have changed their behaviour, high risk for relapse, needs support.
-teach them to deal with potential relapse, promote social support, deal with relapses, support to prevent relapse.
Maintenance
Have been doing this for a while, now it is a habit.
-high confidence/self efficacy, has strategies to deal with relapses, no support for behaviour needed.
-support in maintaining behaviour, prepare incase of relapse & refine/add variety to program
How to deal with relapse
Learn from the mistakes. Make the next session a priority. Prefer small mistakes to full blown relapses.
