Q

How can devices be used to help with behaviour change?

A

features like:
a. notify to close your rings- tracking
b. measures calories burned- motivation/self monitoring
c. readiness score- self monitoring
d. joining groups/competing- social support/motivation/modelling

Q

Factors to consider when purchasing

A
  • ease of use
-purpose/what will you use it for
    -style/comfort
    -durability/waterproof
    -cost
    -battery life
    -accuracy
    -warrenty
    -resale value

List some possible concerns with wearable tech

A
  • data/security
    -inaccuracy/incomplete data
    -diffcult to use
    -addictive/obsessive
    -distraction

Q

FLORENCE
* 69 years old; retired but lives in a rural area on a farm with her husband
* Has good health for her age but has mild to moderate osteoarthritis
(esp. in knees and hips) and was recently diagnosed with mild
hypertension; BMI is 33 and when coupled with waist circumference is
considered “at risk” for metabolic disease
* Does not currently engage in exercise (her GAQ indicates zero
min/week of aerobic exercise) but Florence tells you she does not sit for long periods of time due to yard work/ gardening
* Is thinking about getting more steps in a day and starting a stretching
routine for her low back (she is open to hearing your ideas)
* Has recently bought a Fit Bit and is excited about wearing it
1. What data would you like to measure/track for this client using the wearable technology she has? Consider how you could use that data in practical programming strategies.
2. To support the
programming you have in mind, what feature(s) in her Fit bit would you want her to use to provide behavioral support for the change you have in mind)? Explain your rationale.

A
  1. -measure steps/day
    -stand/sit time
    -HR
    -Type of activity/zones
  2. -small daily step goals
-reminder to stand up (she gardens and many people spend a long time working in the garden in a huntched over position).
    -record flexibility/cool down/stretch activities (workouts).

Q

DAVE

Divorced with no children, 44 years old; works for BC transit (bus driver)
* Good health overall; BMI 21, with waist circumference in the healthy range
* Loves to run; has competed (recreationally) for several decades in half- marathons. Does not do any resistance training. Typical mileage is 50-70k/week
* Is part of a local running club (Prairie inn harriers)
* Has an apple watch (for work), but wears a Garmin watch for running
* Has always been very active, but has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis
and is currently working with a Physiotherapist
* Main goal is to work with you to get a program to strengthen his lower
body to prevent injury in future and to concentrate on recovery

  1. What data would you like to measure/track for this client using the wearable technology she has?
  2. Consider how you could use that data in practical programming strategies. To support the programming you have in mind, what feature(s) in her Fit bit would you want her to use to provide behavioral support for the change you have in mind)?
    Explain your rationale.
A
  1. -lower body exercise tracking
    -running
    -recovery
    HR variability
    -sleep
  2. -HR
    -stretching
-monitor running make sure he severely decreases it
-put Garmin in a spot he cannot see it , might help him decrease his running
-focus on resistence training & recovery

Q

ANN
* Single, 26 years old; recent Camosun grad (now an Accountant working
50+ hours per week so spends a lot of time sitting)
* Good health overall; BMI 24, with waist circumference in the healthy range
* Loves to do cardio (45 min. is the regular routine, 6 days per week, usually
moderate to vigorous intensity, on a variety of machines at the gym)
* Very motivated but frustrated with lack of progress to improve body
comp.; main goal is to lose fat (wants a program from you but is also open
to your advice)
* Multiple social & work obligations; has a few friends who are also active
* Wears an Apple watch

  1. What data would you like to measure/track for this client using the wearable technology she has?

2.Consider how you could use that data in practical programming strategies. To support the programming you
have in mind, what feature(s) in her Fit bit would you want her to use

Explain your rationale.

A
  1. HR, type of workout/zones
    • Look in incorporate 2-3 days of resistence training
-Look for full body/compound exercises for weight loss
      -encourage different types of cardio
-set stand up reminders for work
-ask friends to compete/share your activity with friends
